Box Score

SEATTLE - SeattleU scored three runs in the first and held off several Husky rallies to beat the Washington baseball team, 5-1, in the UW home opener Wednesday night at Husky Ballpark.

Redhawks starter Brandon Kizer (1-0) limited the Huskies to one run on four hits over six and one-third innings for the victory. UW freshman Jared Fisher (0-1), making his first college appearance, suffered the loss, giving up three runs in two-thirds of an inning.

SeattleU (3-1) took advantage of three bases on balls and a hit batter to jump out to the early lead. In the first inning, after a walk and a hit batter, a one-out single from Doug Kincaid opened the scoring for SeattleU. The Redhawks then loaded the bases before a two-out single from Riley Tompkins drove in two more, staking the visitors to a 3-0 lead.

The Huskies (2-2), who'd left the bases loaded in the first and third innings, finally broke through in the fourth. Andrew Ely was hit by a pitch to lead off. After a walk and a bunt moved him to third, he scored on a Jayce Ray groundout to cut the SeattleU lead to 3-1.

SeattleU loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. UW reliever Austin Voth got a strikeout and a shallow fly to give himself a chance to get out of the inning, but a two-out single from Kincaid drove in a pair of runs to stretch the SeattleU lead to 5-1.

Washington threatened once again in the seventh, loading the bases with one out on a pitch-hit double from Caleb Brown and a pair of walks. However, SU reliever Garrett Anderson induced an infield popout and a strikeout to end the inning with the score still 5-1.

The UW got a solid relief outing from sophomore JC transfer Dae Yang Kim, who gave up on runs on just one hit over three and one-third innings. Sophomore Zach Wright also provided the UW with two innings of scoreless relief, allowing no hits.

Next up, the Huskies head to the Los Angeles area for four games. The UW takes on UC Irvine Friday through Sunday before facing Cal State Northridge Monday.
