Box Score

SEATTLE - Down 3-0 entering the ninth inning, the Washington baseball team rallied for two runs, but couldn't quite pull off the comeback as Portland nipped the Huskies, 3-2, Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark.

In the ninth, Chase Anselment walked to lead off. UP closer Chris Dennis came on and hit Julien Pollard with a pitch to put two on. After an out, Husky senior Bradley Boyer drove a pinch-hit double into the left-field corner to score both runners, and moved to third when the ball was misplayed in the corner.

With the tying run at third, Dennis got the second out on strikes before walking Troy Scott to put the winning run on first. But Dennis fanned Doug Cherry for the final out to record his ninth save of the season.

Tuesday night's game featured two freshmen pitchers making their first college starts: Colton Bielaski for Washington and Chris Johnson for the Pilots. Bielaski (0-1), a redshirt freshman from Bellevue, went three innings, allowing one run on two hits to take the loss.

Johnson (2-1) held the Huskies scoreless over six-plus innings, allowing four hits, walking two and striking out four for the win.

Portland grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-out, solo homer from C.J. Cullen, his second of the season.

In the fourth, Cullen led off with a single and, after moving to second on a groundout, scored on a double from Kyle Haskin to make it a 2-0 Pilots lead.

In the fifth, Pilots shortstop Kris Kauppila connected on a two-out solo homer, his first of the season, to make it 3-0.

Washington got two hits each from freshmen Jacob Lamb and Chase Anselment.

Next up for the Huskies is a three-game series at No. 1 Arizona State this weekend in Tempe. All three games vs. ASU will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
