Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - A two-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth drove in the winning run and spoiled the Washington baseball team's season opener Friday as UC Riverside beat the Huskies, 3-2.

The Huskies (0-1) trailed 2-0 before a two-run homer from senior catcher Joey Dunn tied it in the fifth. However, in the ninth, Riverside's Carl Uhl reached on a two-walk and scored on a long double from third baseman Ben Price.

UW reliever Tyler Cheney (0-1), who gave up just the one run, suffered the loss, allowing three hits over three and two-thirds innings of relief. Starter Nick Haughian allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits over five innings.

UCR reliever Rob Waite (1-0) picked up the victory, allowing one hit and fanning three over two innings. Riverside, the depending Big West champion, was also playing its season opener.

In an attempt to avoid rain and get all four scheduled games in, the UW and UCR will play a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The forecasts call for rain on Sunday, but the scheduled 1:00 p.m. game will go on as planned. If all four games have not been completed by Monday, the two teams will play at 1:00 p.m.

Riverside took the early lead without benefit of a hit. With two outs and no one on base, Joey Gonzales was hit by a 3-2 pitch. Aaron Wible followed with a high pop that was dropped by UW first baseman Troy Scott, allowing Gonzales to score all the way from first to give UCR a 1-0 lead.

The Highlanders made it 2-0 in the third when Drew Garcia's single drove in Gonzales.

In the fifth, third baseman Jarett Jackson led off with a single and Dunn hit a home run to left field to tie the game at 2-2. Dunn also homered off of UCR starter Stephen Penney last year in this only at bat against him. Two of Dunn's four career homers have come off of the Riverside right-hander.
