TUCSON, Ariz. - A six-run third inning gave Arizona an early lead as the Wildcats cruised to a 13-4 win over the Washington baseball team Saturday night at Kindall Field.
The 14th-ranked Wildcats (38-13 overall, 13-7 in the Pac-10) took over second place, moving past UCLA with the win. Washington fell into fifth place with the loss, dropping to 27-25 overall and 9-11 in the conference.
After having been shut out Friday, the Huskies got going early Saturday. With two outs and none on the Huskies rallied for three straight base hits. The last of them, a bouncing single through the right side, drove in Matt Hague to give the UW a 1-0 lead.
Arizona scored a two-out run of its own to tie the game in the bottom of the first. With a runner at second with two down, Bill Rhinehart lofted a double into the left-field corner, knotting the score at 1-1.
However, the Wildcats answered with a six-run outburst in the bottom of the third. Colt Sedbrook reached on an error and scored on a double from C.J. Ziegler. After a single, Ziegler scored on a wild pitch to put the Cats in front. Brad Glenn then reached on a third-strike wild pitch T.J. Steele singled to drive in a run. Jon Gaston followed with a tripled to right, driving in two more and then Steele scored on a single from Dwight Childs to make it a 7-2 Arizona lead.
The UW scored a run in the fifth when Burgher singled and eventually came across on a groundout from Rindal. But in the bottom of the inning, a bases-loaded, two-out double from Sedbrook brought home three more Wildcats run, stretching the lead to 10-3.
The Huskies tallied their fourth run in the seventh when Danny Cox doubled and scored on a single from Hague. In the eighth, Gaston hit a two-run homer to left and the Wildcats picked up their 13th run on an RBI single from Ziegler.
Rhinehart went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Gaston drove in four runs with a triple and a homer for the Wildcats. Hague and Trevor Petersen each had two hits for the UW.
UA starter David Coulon (4-3) worked six innings for the victory, allowing four runs on nine hits. Husky starter Elliott Cribby (1-2) surrendered six earned runs on nine hits over four innings for the loss.
