Box Score

SEATTLE - Jeff Petersen threw a one-hit shutout as the Washington baseball team extended its winning streak to nine games with an 11-0 win over Cal State Northridge Saturday in the second- game of a three-game series at Husky Ballpark.

Petersen (1-1), a junior righty from Kentwood High, faced only three batters over the minimum in his nine innings of work and let only one Matador get past first base. He hit three batters, gave up a single to Dominick Phillips in the third and walked one, but got two double plays. He also struck out six in the longest outing of his career.

Friday night in the first game of the series, the Huskies held CSUN to only four hits as starter Sean White took a perfect game into the seventh inning.

The Huskies' nine-game win streak is their longest since the 1997 season, when the strung together two separate 11-game streaks.

Washington (13-6), unbeaten in the nine games this year that it has scored the game's first run, took a 1-0 lead in the third. Brent Lillibridge walked, stole second and moved to third on an error before scoring on a Justin Drake sacrifice fly.

The Huskies took advantage of another CSUN error in the fourth to score two more. Mike Wagner singled, stole second and scored when second baseman Jesse Perez' throw on a Taylor Johnson groundout went wide of first. Later in the inning, a groundout from Lillibridge drove in Johnson and the Huskies led, 3-0.

In the fifth, Drake belted his first homer of the season to lead off the inning. Drake, who missed most of the last two seasons with a variety of injuries, hadn't homered in nearly three years since belting one May 19, 2000.

The UW would go on to score five in the fifth. After the homer, a pair of walks and two outs, Aaron Hathaway singled to drive in a run. Another came across on Perez' second error of the game and the last two scored when Lillibridge blooped a double to right.

Freshman Kyle Jean (0-2) started and suffered the loss for the Matadors (5-20), working four innings.

The Huskies and Matadors close out the three-game series Sunday with a 12 noon game. NOTE: GAME TIME HAS CHANGED FROM 1 P.M. TO NOON. Live radio coverage of the game will air on KKNW AM-1150.
