University of Washington pitcher Jeff Petersen has been named a National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball, the magazine's publishers announced today.

Petersen, a junior from Covington (Kentwood HS), threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout Saturday to beat Cal State Northridge, 11-0. The 6-foot-4 right- hander needed only 105 pitches to throw his first career complete game. He walked only one and struck out six and allowed only one CSUN baserunner to get past first base.

Petersen's one-hitter was the first by a Husky pitcher since Jeff Carlsen one-hit Washington State in 1998. Carlsen was also named a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week after that outing.

Three other players from around the country -- Kennesaw State pitcher Grant Reynolds (19 strikeouts), South Alabama pitcher Troy Neal (15 Ks in a three- hitter) and New Mexico State outfielder Alex Borgo (5 HRs, 21 RBI over six games) -- shared the award with Petersen.

The Huskies (14-6), who have won 10 in a row, travel to face UC Irvine this weekend.
