SEATTLE - Nineteen games against postseason qualifiers from last season highlight the 2002-03 University of Washington men's basketball schedule announced Thursday by first-year head coach Lorenzo Romar.

Washington plays 14 games against opponents that participated in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, including two meetings with Arizona which is ranked No. 1 in several preseason publications. The Wildcats, who visit Bank of America Arena on Feb. 6, are one of seven NCAA Tournament teams that make trips to Seattle this season.

The schedule also features five games against 2002 National Invitation Tournament competitors.

The Huskies will host 17 home games, including two exhibition contests. UW makes its first appearance under Romar during those exhibition games, Nov. 12 against Central Washington and Nov. 18 against Athletes in Action. Both exhibitions tip-off at 7 p.m. in Bank of America Arena.

Washington begins Pac-10 play at home on Jan. 2 against UCLA followed by a Jan. 4 visit from USC. The Pac-10 slate includes a rare Friday night home game against Washington State on Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m.

Highlighting the non-conference home slate is a Dec. 5 meeting with Wyoming which defeated Gonzaga in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament. Other non-conference home games include a Dec. 14 visit by Eastern Washington, which is coached by former Husky assistant Ray Giacoletti, and a Dec. 23 encounter with 2002 NIT participant Houston.

The Huskies have three non-conference away games, including back-to-back outings at UNLV and Gonzaga on Nov. 30 and Dec. 2, respectively. UW plays Dec. 7 at Santa Clara.

"This schedule will definitely test us. The Pac-10 is certainly as competitive as any 18 games you are going to play. The nine non-conference games that we have are going to be fairly strong as well," said Romar. "We open with Montana State who is predicted to finish in the top-two in their conference and then we hit the road right away early to go to Gonzaga and UNLV. It's a tough early season schedule for us.

"There are some good teams that are coming in here to play. Cal State Northridge beat UCLA at UCLA during a Sweet 16 season a couple years ago. Eastern Washington is picked to win their conference. Houston is from Conference USA and we played against them at Saint Louis. They are always very athletic and strong."

As it did last year, the schedule concludes with the Pac-10 Tournament, March 13-15 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The top eight teams in the regular-season standings will compete for the conference championship and an automatic NCAA Tournament berth.

"I like it. Everywhere that I've been as a head coach we've had conference tournaments and they've been kind to us," Romar remarked.

Washington registered an 11-18 record in 2002 and earned a berth to the Pac-10 Tournament with an eighth-place regular-season record of 5-13.
