Box Score

PULLMAN, Wash. - Shortstop Danny Cox led off the eighth inning with a triple and scored the go-ahead run on a single from Michael Burgher as the Washington baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Washington State with a 6-5 win Sunday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Cox, a sophomore from Chehalis, lofted a fly ball to deep right-center that dropped just in front of diving center fielder Zach Borba. After a groundout, Burgher singled through a drawn-in infield, scoring Cox to break a 4-4 tie. Burgher scored an insurance run on a double from Bradley Boyer. Cox finished the game 2-for-5 with a double, a triple, two RBI and a run.

The Huskies (14-9 overall and 3-0 in Pac-10 play) have now won 12 of their last 13 games while the Cougars dropped to 13-10 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

UW reliever Brandon McKerney, who induced an inning-ending double play with bases loaded in the seventh, earned the win to improve to 1-0.

Closer Nick Hagadone threw the final two innings for his fifth save. In the ninth, the Cougars scored an unearned run on a two-out RBI single from Jim Murphy, but Jeff Miller flied out to end the game.

Cougars reliever Steve Kost, who gave up the triple to Cox suffered the loss to fall to 1-2.

Washington scored the game's first run in the second as Jake Rife singled and eventually scored on a two-out single from Burgher.

In the third, the Huskies scored three more runs, all with two out. Curt Rindal doubled with two outs and then scored on a single from freshman DH Joey Lind. After Rife walked, both he and Lind scored on a double from Cox, staking the Huskies with a 4-0 lead.

The Cougars cut the lead in half with two runs on five hits in the fourth. A two-run single with the bases loaded from Borba drove in both runs, but WSU left the bases loaded with the UW still on top, 4-2.

In the fifth, WSU left fielder Scott Suttmeier led off with a single. Paul Gran followed win a liner off the leg of UW pitcher Tyler Cheney, who recovered in time to make a throw, but the ball hit Gran running down the line, allowing Suttmeier to score all the way from first. Gran, who moved to third on the errant throw, scored on a wild pitch, tying the game at 4-4.

The Cougars loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, but McKerney got a double play to end the threat.

Next up for the Huskies is a three-game series vs. No. 17 Arizona State (21-8, 2-1 Pac-10) next weekend at Husky Ballpark. All three games will air live on KKNW AM-1150 and on the internet at gohuskies.com. Game times are Friday at 6:30 p.m., Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
