Box Score

SEATTLE - Senior Jeff Carlsen threw five and one-third innings to earn his 24th career victory as the Washington baseball team beat Portland, 10-5, in a non-conference game Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark.

Carlsen, now 2-2 on the year, ranks second in UW career victories behind Mike Smith, who won 27 games from 1978 to 1980. Carlsen, a 6-foot-7 righty from Poulsbo, Wash., entered the year with 22 career wins, but has struggled to recover from off-season shoulder surgery and was making only his sixth start. He allowed three runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out none for the win.

The Huskies (28-16) jumped on Portland starter Jeff Cambers (2-2) in the first, taking advantage of three walks in the inning. Brandon Jacobson walked to lead off and, after a Marc Rittenhouse single, Jay Garthwaite belted a double that scored both runners. After stealing third, Garthwaite eventually scored on a groundout to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.

Portland, however, stormed back with three of its own in the second inning as Steve Chamberlain and Brock Griffin hit back-to-back homers over the right-field fence. Chamberlain's homer came with a man aboard and at the end of the half inning, the Pilots had tied the score at 3-3.

Washington, without the benefit of a hit, scored a run in the bottom of the second to take a 4-3 lead. Jefferson Thiel walked, moved to second on a walk and to third on a passed ball before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Rittenhouse. Washington made it 5-3 in the third when Tyler Davidson walked, stole second and scored on a Tila Reynolds double.

The Huskies scored two more in the seventh and after the Pilots posted two in the seventh, Washington came back with three more after the seventh-inning stretch to extend its lead to 10-5. Five different Huskies -- Rittenhouse, Garthwaite, Reynolds, Thiel and Duggan Moran -- ended the game with two RBI each. Reynolds, Davidson and Rittenhouse each had two hits.

The Huskies and Pilots (20-30) close out the two-game series Wednesday with a 4:00 p.m. game.
