SEATTLE - A two-run homer in the fourth inning by third baseman Michael Done proved to be the difference as the Washington baseball team beat Oregon State, 3-1, Sunday at Husky Ballpark to win a three-game Pac-10 series, two games to one. Washington improved to 27-16 overall and 7-11 in the Pac-10 while OSU fell to 29-20, 9-9.
Husky junior Zack Daniels improved to 4-1 with the victory. The lefty from Fircrest, Wash., allowed only one run on five hits over seven innings off work. He also went 2-for- 3 at the plate and singled with two outs in the fourth before Done's homer. Tyler Shepple, who loaded the bases in the ninth, hung on to record his second save of the year with a two-inning outing.
OSU struck for one run in the first when Josh Carter singled to plate Bryan Ingram, but Daniels left the bases loaded that inning. Daniels also wiggled out of a jam in the fourth, once again leaving three runners on base, before facing the minimum over his final three innings of work.
Done's homer, his team-leading seventh of the season, came off of OSU starter Thad Johnson (6-7), who went the distance in the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits. Done, second baseman Marc Rittenhouse and Jay Garthwaite each finished with two hits, as Garthwaite's double in the seventh plated Rittenhouse with the Huskies' third run of the day.
OSU got two hits each from Carter and designated hitter Curtis Davis. In the ninth, the Beavers loaded the bases on a single by pinch hitter Brian Barden, an error and a walk to Ingram, but Rittenhouse fielded a sharp ground ball by Davis and made the final out to end the game.
The Huskies take on Portland this week in a pair of non-league games Tuesday (6:30 p.m.) and Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) before playing host to Arizona State in a three-game Pac-10 series Saturday through Monday at Husky Ballpark. All three ASU-UW games begin at 1:00 p.m.
