TUCSON, Ariz. - A long, rainy day in Tucson ended in the Husky baseball team falling to Missouri by a 17-6 score in day two of the Cactus Classic at Tucson Electric Park.
Due to rain that caused a four-plus hour rain delay during the Gonzaga-New Mexico State game earlier in the day, the Huskies' Saturday schedule was changed as their game vs. Gonzaga was moved to Sunday and the Missouri game was pushed back to a 7:48 p.m. MST start.
The Huskies (1-1) led much of the way, but the Tigers (1-1) erupted in the seventh and eighth innings, scoring four in the seventh to take their first lead and then putting the game away with nine more in the eighth.
Reliever Zack Hadoin (1-0) picked up the victory for the Tigers with one inning of work. UW righty Zach Clem (0-1) suffered the loss with two-thirds of an inning in relief.
Washington jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the second. Troy Scott doubled and scored on a single from Pierce Rankin. After Rankin took second on a wild pitch, he scored on a single from freshman Chase Anselment to give the UW a 2-0 lead.
After having gone down in order in their first two at bats, the Tigers rallied to tie it at 2-2 in the third. After a single and a walk, shortstop Michael Liberto doubled to left.
However, Anselment, the designated hitter from Meadowdale making his first college start, came through in the third. With the bases loaded and two out, he lined a single through the right side, scoring a pair to give the UW a 4-2 lead.
Missouri cut the lead to 6-4 with two runs in the fifth. Dane Opel led off with a triple to left and scored on a single from Liberto, who eventually scored on a bases-loaded groundout.
In the seventh, the Tigers loaded the bases again with no outs. After getting one across on a double-play groundout, an RBI single from DH Jonah tied the game at 6-6. First baseman Aaron Senne followed with a homer down the right-field line, giving Missouri its first lead of the night at 8-6.
In the eighth, the Tigers used six hits, two walks and two hit batters to add nine more runs.
Anselment led the Husky hitters, going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in.
The Huskies close out their season-opening trip to Tucson with a game Sunday afternoon vs. Gonzaga (a change from the previous schedule). The game, originally scheduled for 2:00 p.m. MST, will begin as soon as the New Mexico State-Missouri (start time: 10:00 a.m. MST) game ends. Washington will not play New Mexico State Sunday, as originally scheduled and will play only three games this weekend.
