Washington vs. Rice November 27, 2005 Post-Game Quotes

Head Coach June Daugherty
General Comments:
"We knew Rice was going to bring size and their rotations off the bench. They're a very well coached team and a team that plays very hard. We won the battle inside and that's something that is a great step for this program. Obviously, Dre (Plouffe) played really well in the post tonight. To me, that was the difference tonight. To be able to accept the challenge of playing against that kind of size and strength and it was awesome to see that."

On game plan: "We are going to take what the game gives us. These guys did a great job of posting up and demanding the basketball. I thought if they had single coverage they were looking to take them and if not they were looking to kick out to an open teammate. It's our regular system, it's just what Rice gave us tonight. I thought our front line, in particular Dre, stepped up and honored that challenge that we were going to go rough and tough against that front line."

On getting scoring from different places: "Dre and (Emily) Florence really had us going that first half and we were really counting on our defense and our rebounding. I thought we did a good job early in the game on the boards to get into our running game. Other people stepped up and that's what we need to do. We need to keep getting other people in the scoring column and different weapons out there."

On defending Lauren Neaves: "We mixed up the defense quite a bit. I thought we very much responded to the challenge of playing a little bit more physical on the cuts and trying to push her out of her comfort zone. And then when she was able to get the basketball and face up, we played really solid. We got some good help from our outside people pitching in so that she couldn't see the lanes because she's good off the dribble as well."

On different defenses: "We played four different ones. Two were in our pressing scheme and that was pretty good tonight. We wanted to stay in our press as much as we could because Rice is so good at running so as long as we could stay with our twos and threes out there tonight solid and force them to do something else, you saw some people get steals off of that. And then we played our zone and our player-to-player in half court."

On the team's progress: "We're really excited to see these guys playing better each night. We don't feel like we're anywhere where we can be as a team. As a coaching staff we have a lot to do, but our confidence is growing and the understanding of our roles is definitely improving. We just need to go to work. ...it's really going to be a good week for us to really refine our system and make some strides."

Forward Andrea Plouffe
On playing more this season:
"I feel more confidant with the more games I get to play in, and the more time I am on the floor. I can be more aggressive."

On what she worked on in the off season: "I worked on conditioning number one for me after my knee surgery, I got out of shape a lot. And I worked on strength and post game."

On going up against Lauren Neaves: "I wasn't really focused on who was guarding me. I was just going."

Guard Emily Florence
On if she likes chasing down loose balls, or crashing the boards for rebounds:
"They both feel pretty good our team is all about defense. When we box out, it is easy for me to get in there and get a rebound. But getting in the floor, I think that is what gets our team going. It gives us energy. And when they see me diving on the floor for loose balls, I think it gets people going, and ready to go."

On Andrea Plouffe: "She is amazing. She has improved so much. It actually gives us an inside game, where last year we were a lot smaller team. And with her being in there and so strong, it brings people down there to guard her, and then we are open around the perimeter for an easy shot. And she is a really smart player, and she gets in there, and she is really physical, and could box people out, and get some boards. She also finds the open player. She has been working out this off-season, getting in shape, and being able to run the floor too. She is a big help to us."

On going up against Baylor: "It should be fun. They are undefeated, and they are a great team. I think June said that Sophia Young got seventeen rebounds this last game. So it should be fun playing against them this year. Last year I think we were tied with them at half time, so we hung in there. So us going in undefeated too and coming off a big win against Rice, I think it is going to be a good win. I am excited about it."

On how this team has improved since last playing against Baylor: " I thin we are a completely different team. We didn't lose anyone last year, so we are really experienced, and the team chemistry is great right now, and we all understand each other on the floor, and we can read each other better, and we are all confident in each other, and we know what we all can do. I think we can read each other offensively and defensively, so I think we are a lot more experience than last year.

On her scoring: "Cameo Hicks had 26 points last night, and I think Rice realized that. So they were face guarding her most of the game. So they were trying to shut her down. Our team is really deep, and I knew someone had to step up, and I was able to get some open shots and drain them."
