Washington 90, Arizona State 81
January 31, 2004
Bank of America Arena/Seattle, Wash.
WASHINGTON HEAD COACH Lorenzo Romar
"That was a bizarre game. I have never been involved in a game like that as a player or coach. I thought the officials made a point to keep the game under control as they saw two teams that were playing very aggressively. I give credit again to our players. We took care of the ball, scored 90 points and only had 14 turnovers. Arizona State has had their way with us in the past on the boards and we outrebounded them tonight. Tre Simmons gave us a lift tonight. It was a team effort and it feels good to have won four straight."
On his reactions to the officials:
"Sometimes when your team is out there fighting and scrapping I want to let them know that we (the coaches) are right there with them."
On Tre Simmons:
"Seventeen first-half points is huge. When everyone sees that Tre is playing well, it gives them a lift. We know what he is capable of."
On the defense against Ike Diogu:
"Mike Jensen really scrapped against him. I thought we did a decent job against Ike Diogu, and he ended up scoring 23 points. He is a very good basketball player and a phenomenal low post scorer. Nate Robinson was all over the floor. He didn't score 30 but he played great defense and helped out against Ike Diogu."
WASHINGTON POINT GUARD Will Conroy
On a possible letdown after the Arizona victory:
"I think the coaches were more concerned about it than us players were. I'm a player and I knew how our team felt. We were not satisfied at all with just a victory over Arizona. It was tough and we thought we were going to get away with it early. We had to battle through adversity. Our big guy got kicked out of the game and we had to fight through it."
On the game after the technical fouls:
"I'm happy with the way we responded after that little break. I was nervous to take that three, but sometimes you have to take those shots. Coach Bone always tells me if the ball comes back to me the second or third time on a possession, that I have to look to shoot it."
On Mike Jensen and Anthony Washington:
"Those guys stepped up tonight. They have been taking the most criticism out of anyone in the Pac-10. They have responded these last four games. Even Hakeem Rollins has contributed. How about Tre Simmons too? He gave us a huge boost with his career high."
ARIZONA STATE HEAD COACH ROB EVANS
"I thought that our guys played harder than they did at Washington State and competed, but they got beat on the offensive glass and anytime you get beat on the offensive glass you're not going to win very many basketball games. They were tougher than we were tonight."
On Arizona State turnovers:
"Eighteen turnovers is too many. They were aggressive defensively, but we need to take care of the basketball. We threw it away too many times and that is uncharacteristic of us."
On Ike Diogu:
"He's not exploding like he was earlier in the season. I'm not sure if he's tired or fatigued, but we need him to step up."
"They are a good basketball team. They have everybody back that they did last year, and experience makes a lot of difference. They now have a lot of experience making them a better basketball team."
