Tucson, Ariz. - Washington junior Alex Prugh turned in his third 68 of the season today at the National Invitational, leading the Huskies at 4-under par and placing fourth after the first round. The 24th-ranked UW men's golf team finished round one in a tie for 8th place at 1-over 289. UCLA, led by individual leader Erik Flores' 7-under 65, leads the team competition at 11-under 277.

"Alex had a great round," said Washington head coach Matt Thurmond. "He came out and played really solid the whole day. It was not a great round for us as a team, but it was definitely a step in the right direction."

Junior Erik Olson carded the Huskies' second-best round of the day, a 1-under 71 that put him in a tie for 20th position. Freshman John Wise's 1-over 73 was good for 39th. Senior James Lepp and Freshman Kellen Eakin shot 77 and 79, good for 76th and 83rd place, respectively. Wise and Eakin are both making their Washington varsity debut at the tournament.

"I'm proud of John. It was his first varsity round and he came out and played really well. It's been a lot of fun having both John and Kellen on the trip. It's great to have them here because they bring a lot of energy to the team - a lot of enthusiasm and excitement."

The second round of the National Invitational begins tomorrow 7:30 a.m. (MT). Live scoring of the event is available at golfstat.com.
