ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Five athletes from the University of Washington women's rowing team were selected to the All-West Region Team and senior Gemma Edward-Aron received a national Scholar-Athlete Award when the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced its annual honors.

A junior from San Anselmo, Calif., Edward-Aron has compiled an outstanding 3.72 grade point average while majoring in art. She rows in the No. 2 seat for the Huskies who placed second at the Pac-10 Championships on May 16.

This marks the sixth year that the CRCA has distributed scholar-athlete awards that are designed to recognize members of varsity crews with 3.5 or better grade point averages.

Five members of the Huskies' varsity eight crew were voted to the all-region squad. Senior Yvonneke Stenken (Sacramento, Calif.) and junior Sanda Hangan (Dorohoi, Romania) were honored as first-team selections. Hangan strokes Washington's varsity eight while Stenken rows in the No. 6 seat.

A trio of Huskies were second-team selections: senior coxswain Megan Mach (Seattle, Wash./Ballard HS), senior Mary Reeves (Dayton, Wash./Dayton HS) and sophomore Allison DePalma (Los Gatos, Calif.). Reeves, the No. 4 seat, joins Stenken as the only senior rowers in the varsity eight. They are also the only returnees from last year's top UW boat that finished fourth at the 2003 NCAA Championships. The lone sophomore in the Huskies' varsity eight is DePalma who rows in the No. 5 seat.

Washington concludes the 2004 season with the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships, May 28-30 at Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif.
