PORTLAND - Portland Trail Blazers guard and former University of Washington star Brandon Roy was named a 2009 NBA All-Star reserve by a vote of Western Conference head coaches, the NBA announced.

The second-time NBA All-Star has helped guide the Trail Blazers to a 28-17 record, averaging 22.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.22 steals and 37.1 minutes in 41 games (all starts).

Roy, 24, becomes the 10th Trail Blazer to garner multiple All-Star nods after netting 18 points (8-10 FG), nine rebounds, five assists, one steal and 29 minutes in last year's All-Star Game in New Orleans. His 18 points matched a team high for the Western Conference squad and marked the second-highest total from a Trail Blazer playing in an All-Star Game, all-time.

Roy has led Portland in points 26 times, assists 19 times and counts 26 games of 20-plus points in 2008-09. His 52 points scored in a Dec. 18 win vs. Phoenix stands as the most in regulation in franchise history and the most in regulation by an NBA player this season. Roy matched a franchise high on Jan. 24 vs. Washington with 10 steals, also the most in the NBA this season.

Last week, Roy's #3 jersey was retired at the UW in a special ceremony prior to the Huskies' win over USC. He is only the second Washington player to have his jersey retired.

The West's starting five, decided by fan balloting, consists of Amar'e Stoudemire (Phoenix), Tim Duncan (San Antonio), Yao Ming (Houston), Kobe Bryant (L.A. Lakers) and Chris Paul (New Orleans).

The 2009 NBA All-Star Game tips off at 5 p.m. (Pacific) on Sunday, Feb. 15, from US Airways Center in Phoenix. The event will be televised live on TNT.

Roy joins teammates Greg Oden (T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam) and Rudy Fernandez (T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam and Sprite Slam Dunk Contest) at All-Star Weekend.
