PORTLAND, Ore. - The Washington rowing team swept all four main events Saturday at the annual Portland Loop competition on the Willamette River's Lake Oswego/Oaks Park course.
The event was a "head" race in which crews started at intervals from a single-file line. Teams were forced to navigate around opposing boats in order to pass during the 7,000-meter competition on a Portland section of the Willamette River.
The Washington entry in the men's championship eight event included six members of the varsity eight that placed third at the 2002 IRA Championships in June. The Huskies posted a winning time of 20-minutes, 14.2-seconds Saturday, followed by Oregon State's runner-up mark of 20:56.9. The Beavers placed fourth in the 2002 IRA varsity eight race.
The Husky junior varsity posted the most decisive victory of the day, winning the collegiate open event by 1:17. Washington's first-place time was 20:35.7 while the host Beavers placed second in 21:52.7.
The closest race of the day was the women's championship eight competition. Washington completed the course in 22:54.6, followed eight-seconds later by Oregon State in 23:02.9. The UW women's varsity eight included three members of the crew that won the 2002 NCAA varsity eight championship.
The Washington women produced a 14-second margin of victory in the collegiate open eights race, registering a time of 23:33.5. Oregon State finished with a second-place mark of 23:47.3.
The Portland Loop was the first race of the season for the Husky men. The Washington women competed Oct. 20 at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. They were the top NCAA finishers, placing fourth overall.
The Huskies conclude the fall season next weekend in Seattle. Washington hosts the Pair Head on Saturday, Nov. 9 and the Head of the Lake Regatta on Sunday, Nov. 10. Both events begin at 8 a.m. on a course that starts in Lake Union, travels through the Montlake Cut and finishes in Lake Washington.
