Box Score

SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team, off to its best start since 1994 at 13-4 on the season, completed a two-game, non-conference series sweep, beating Washington State, 7-4, Wednesday night at Husky Ballpark.

Six of the Huskies' seven runs in the game were unearned, thanks to four Cougar errors. Third baseman Michael Done went 2-for-2 with two doubles, two walks and a hit-by-pitch, and freshman second baseman John Otness finished 3-for-5 with three runs batted in.

Down 3-0, the Huskies scored one unearned run in the fourth when Done doubled down the right field line and moved to third when the ball was mis-played in the corner. He scored on an Otness groundout.

In the fifth, the Huskies posted four more unearned runs. With two down and runners at first and second, Jay Garthwaite bounced a ball to shortstop Richard Hall, a former Husky, who was distracted by the runner and couldn't field the ball cleanly. That opened the flood gates as Tyler Davidson singled home two runs. After a walk, Otness drove in two more with another single to give the UW a 5-3 lead.

Just as in Tuesday night's game, WSU (8-16) posted an early 3-0 lead. In the first, Mike Knight reached on an error and eventually scored on an infield single from Bookie Gates. In the third, Knight walked and scored on a double from Stefan Bailie, and Bailie came around on a double from Tyson Boston.

The Cougars pulled within a run at 5-4 with a run in the seventh, but in the bottom of the inning, Tyler Davidson reached on an error and scored on Done's second double. Done then scored on a single from pinch hitter Duggan Moran.

Husky junior starter Randy Vanderplow improved to 1-1 with the win, the first of his career, working five innings. Scott Robertson pitched the ninth for his fourth save of the season. WSU starter Tyson Thompson (1-3) worked four and two-thirds in the loss, despite not allowing an earned run.

The Huskies and Cougars both travel to the Bay Area this Friday through Sunday for three- game Pac-10 series. The Cougs take on California while Washington heads to Sunken Diamond to face No. 1 Stanford. All three Stanford games will air live on KSRB AM-1150 and on www.1150ksrb.com.
