THIS WEEKEND: The Washington baseball team (12-10), winner of five games in a row, opens up Pac-10 Conference play with a three-game series vs. cross-state rival Washington State (14-7) this Thursday through Saturday at Husky Ballpark. The first two games of the series, both 6:00 p.m. starts, will air live on KKNW AM-1150 radio in the Seattle area. Fans can watch live video of all three games on the "Dawg Channel" at gohuskies.com (subscription service). Junior lefty Geoff Brown is slated to start Thursday's game vs. the Cougars and sophomore right-hander Andrew Kittredge gets the start on Friday. Saturday's starter has yet to be determined. After the WSU series, the Dawgs remain in the Northwest for a two-game, non-league series next Tuesday and Wednesday at Gonzaga before returning home next weekend (April 9-11) for a Pac-10 series with Arizona. COACH MEGGS: Lindsay Meggs was named the Huskies' new head coach in July of 2009, just the third different UW head coach in 34 years. Meggs came to the UW after having spent the last three seasons at Indiana State and the 13 prior to that at Chico State, where he won NCAA Division II national championships in 1997 and 1999. He helped Chico to the D-II College World Series seven times and won the league eight times. At Indiana State, he was named Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the Sycamores to a second-place finish, their highest since 1998. Meggs currently boasts a 627-317-4 record over 16-plus seasons as a four-year college head coach. He'd previously served as head coach at Long Beach City College and Oxnard College. Born in San Jose and a graduate of Saratoga (Calif.) High, Meggs played four seasons as the starting third baseman at UCLA. He was drafted by the Brewers in 1983, and then again by the Royals after his senior year in 1984. Meggs is joined by assistant coaches Dave Nakama, Greg Moore and Kevin Ticen.
SERIES HISTORY: Washington State leads the all-time series against Washington, 230-179. Last year in Pullman, the Cougars swept the Huskies in a three-game series on the final weekend of the regular season. The Cougars won 6-5 in 10 innings in the opener, 7-1 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday. The last time the two teams played at Husky Ballpark, in 2008, Washington won two out of three, taking game one (12-3) and three (5-1), while the Cougars won the middle game, also by a 5-1 final score. Dating back to and including the 1992 season, Washington is 55-26 against the Cougars in Pac-10 Conference games, including 27-15 in games played in Seattle. The Huskies and Cougars have also met in 14 games that didn't count in in the Pac-10 standings during that timespan with the UW going 11-3 in those games. All totalled, the Huskies have gone 66-29 vs. WSU over the last 18 seasons.
HUSKIES BACK AT SAFECO FIELD: Washington will return to Safeco Field for the fourth consecutive season this year when the Huskies host Stanford in a 6:30 p.m. game on Saturday, May 1. Earlier that day, at 12:10 p.m., the Mariners play host to the Texas Rangers at Safeco. Fans who show a ticket stub from the M's game can redeem it for a discounted $5 ticket to the Husky game. Last season, the Huskies played two games at Safeco. A crowd of 3,675 saw a 3-1 Oregon State win and there were 4,296 on hand for a 6-4 Arizona State victory later in the year. Three seasons ago, the Huskies beat No. 8 OSU, 6-2, in their first-ever game at Safeco. Attendance was 10,421., at the time a league record for a conference game. In 2008, the Huskies edged Arizona, 1-0, on a two-hit, 15-strikeout shutout by Nick Haughian as 5,187 fans watched on. Tickets are $8 and UW students are admitted free.
