LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Athletic Club's John R. Wooden Award Committee announced its midseason John R. Wooden Award list today and Washington Husky senior guard Quincy Pondexter (Fresno, Calif.) was among 31 candidates for the nation's most prestigious award.
Pondexter was one of 10 players who was not on the preseason list that was added at the midseason. He is averaging 21.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game to lead the Huskies. In addition, Pondexter is among the Pac-10 Conference leaders in scoring (3rd), rebounds (4th), field goal percentage (56.5%, 5th), free throw percentage (82.2%, 5th), steals (1.8, 5th), blocks (0.9, 9th), defensive rebounds (4.7, 7th) and offensive rebounds (3.6, 2nd).
Pondexter has twice been named Pac-10 Player of the Week and is the conference's active career rebounding leader with 600. He is currently 15th on the UW's all-time scoring list (1,368 points) and moving up the list rapidly.
Sophomore Isaiah Thomas was included on the Wooden Award preseson list but did not appear on today's list. Just as players who are not on the preseason list are eligible for the Midseason Top 30, players who do not make the Midseason list are still eligible for the national ballot, which will be selected in March and will consist of approximately 20 players, chosen by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board Committee.
Players selected to the national ballot will have to be certified by their university as making progress toward graduation and maintaining a cumulative 2.0 GPA.
