Georgetown vs. Washington
John R. Wooden Classic presented by Toyo Tires
Coach Lorenzo Romar
I was very impressed with Georgetown. They executed. We did a decent job in the first half of maintaining discipline. You have to be disciplined defensively against a team like that is constantly putting pressure with the backdoor cuts. The second half we weren't disciplined and as a result, they got tons of easy baskets on us. We also didn't do a very good job of taking care of the basketball. Twenty-five turnovers against a team like Georgetown is going to put you in a bad way. I commend our guys for fighting until the end. Our guys didn't quit. In the second half we came out flat. They methodically continued to do what they were doing and were able to distance themselves from us.
On Pondexter and Thomas doing most of the scoring
Those two are the only ones averaging in double figures. That is how it has been. They have been carrying the scoring load. With the other guys, they have to find a rhythm and be able to shoot the ball confidently. These guys have to continue to be aggressive and come out and play.
On the second half
We came out lackadaisical and weren't hustling as much as we were in the first half. We were just moving in slow motion and they beat us on a lot of easy plays. I wish we could restart that half again and maybe the outcome would be different for the game.
On the Georgetown frontcourt
It was pretty tough. Those guys are big. Julian Vaughn is 6-10, 250 and so is Greg Monroe. They have a lot of weight on us and were able to do a lot of good things. Monroe is versatile. He can put the ball on the deck and quick like a guard sometimes.
Coach John Thompson III
We are excited to be part of this event because of Coach Wooden and have the opportunity to come out here to play a terrific well-coached Washington team. We had a pretty good stretch at the start of the second half. We were able to stretch things out a bit and held on at the end. That is a terrific win against a very good team.
On win over Washington and Butler in the last two games
We have a resilient group. With Butler and Washington, they are two terrific teams with very different styles of play. I wanted that because within our league every other night you are playing a team with a totally different style of play. I wanted that preparation. For long stretches, in both games, our defense was pretty good. We made both teams take tough shots. That was our goal. We want the opposition to take tough, contest shots and I thought we did that.
On remaining undefeated
I'm happy. We are undefeated. The team has worked really hard together. We are trying to keep finding ways to win. It's nothing special that we are doing. We are just working together and executig.
On the team's offense
The whole group, as a core, we have good chemistry. We keep playing unselfishly. We just try to grind it out and keep the offense going. Everyone looks for each other and try to get the best shot on offense. We aren't trying to exploit anything. We're just trying to make open shots and play good basketball.
