Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz. - Down 4-0 and then 9-4, the Washington baseball team came back, scoring two in the seventh, one in the eighth and three in the ninth to beat Gonzaga, 10-9 Sunday in the final game of the Cactus Classic at Tucson Electric Park.

In the ninth, Washington got a leadoff triple from center fielder Caleb Brown, his second three-bagger of the game to go with a two-run homer. He scored on a single from DH Pierce Rankin. After an out, junior catcher Miles Kizer doubled to left-center to drive in pinch runner Julien Pollard, Kizer's first hit as a Husky.

Then, after a second out, senior pinch hitter Doug Cherry drove a single to right to score pinch runner Chase Anselment with the game-winning run.

Both teams ended the opening weekend of college baseball with 2-1 records.

Washington freshman reliever Adam Cimber pitched three innings of scoreless relief for the victory. He gave up two hits and no walks. Gonzaga closer Liam Baron came on to begin the ninth and suffered the loss.

Brown, the UW center fielder from Bremerton, finished the game 3-for-5 with two triples, a homer and four RBI.

Gonzaga jumped on the UW in the first as a two-run double from Andy Hunter was followed by a pair of RBI doubles from Royce Bolinger and Sean Wilson, staking the Bulldogs with a quick 4-0 lead.

However, the Huskies scored four of their own in the second inning to tie it at 4-4. With the bases loaded and two outs, senior Bradley Boyer hit a ground ball that was fielded by Bolinger, the Zags first baseman. Boyer beat the pitcher to the bag to score one, but Bolinger's throw was errant, allowing a second run to score.

Brown then followed with a triple to right-center, scoring two more to knot the score at 4-4.

But the lead was short-lived as the Zags scored five runs in the fifth. GU second baseman Clayton Eslick broke the tie with an RBI single and, after a walk a single and a force out, Hunter, a Tucson native, delivered a grand slam to left center, giving Gonzaga a 9-4 lead.

Washington was held hitless after Brown's triple in the second until, with a runner aboard via walk with two outs in the seventh, Brown belted his first homer of the year into the bullpen in left to cut the lead to 9-6.

In the eighth, left fielder Brendan Gardner-Young belted a two-out double to drive in Andy Smith, cutting the lead to 9-7.

Next up for the Huskies is a three-game series next weekend against Fresno State at Husky Ballpark. Game times are 5:00 p.m. on Friday, 2:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
