LONG BEACH, Calif. - One night after a four-hour, 23-minute slugfest, Washington and Long Beach State squared off in a low-scoring pitchers' duel Saturday at Blair Field. This time, though, it was Long Beach that emerged as the winner as starter Andrew Gagnon limited the Huskies to just three hits in a 3-1 LBSU victory.
The Huskies, who won 11-9 on Friday after trailing 6-0 and 9-4, fell to 5-5 on the season while the Dirtbags improved to 4-5.
Gagnon (2-1) went the distance for the victory. He gave up only three hits and one run, which was unearned and came via a two-out error in the ninth inning.
Washington got solid pitching from starter Ben Guidos and relievers Geoff Brown and Jacob Clem. Guidos (0-2) suffered the loss despite allowing only two runs on four hits over three and two-thirds innings. Brown pitched three and one-third innings, allowing one run (unearned) on three hits while striking out three while Clem didn't allow a hit or a run in his inning.
In the first, LBSU leadoff hitter Brennan Metzger was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a bunt and scored on a single from Devin Lohman, giving the Dirtbags a 1-0 lead.
After that, Guidos retired the next nine before Long Beach State rallied for a second-run in the fourth. With two outs, Joey Terdoslavich singled, took second on a balk and scored on a single from Jonathan Jones, increasing the lead to 2-0.
In the seventh, LBSU tacked on a third as Metzger singled to drive in Derek Legg, making it 3-0.
In the ninth, Husky first baseman Troy Scott, who also doubled in the fourth to account for two of the three UW hits, and Pierce Rankin singled. With two outs, Caleb Brown's grounder to short was mis-handled and Rankin scored the Huskies' lone run thanks to the error.
Weather permitting (rain is forecast), the Huskies and Dirtbags will wrap up the series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
