The Washington baseball team exploded for eight runs in the eighth inning to beat Washington State, 15-6, in the first game of their three-game series Saturday at Bailey- Brayton Field. The game was suspended due to rain in the sixth inning Friday night. The Huskies led 7-6 at the time of the suspension.

Jay Garthwaite's grand slam was the big hit of the inning and a two-run single from Tila Reynolds accounted for two more of the runs.

UW senior Matt Gardner (2-0), who entered the game in the fourth inning and continued Saturday to finish the game, earned the victory. The lefty threw four and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. He took advantage of three of the four double plays the Huskies turned in the game.

Cougar starter Zach Fisher (0-6) worked four and two-thirds innings in the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on 11 hits. The Cougar defense made eight errors in the game, including three from Bookie Gates and two each from Tanner Kahler and Brent Robertson.

The Cougars took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, as Stefan Bailie's three-run homer, his 14th, capped the outburst. The Huskies, down 5-2 entering the fifth, took advantage of three WSU errors in the fifth to score five runs and take a lead they'd never surrender.

Michael Done got that five-run fifth started with a two-run double. Washington tied it at 5-5 when Brandon Jacobson singled home Done and the Huskies took a lead when Ben Johnson scored from third base on an error by Robertson at third base.

All nine Husky starters had a hit in the game. Tyler Davidson went 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Reynolds had three hits and two RBI and Garthwaite finished 2-for-6 with four runs batted in.

Mike Knight led the Cougars with three hits, including two doubles, in five at bats.

The Huskies and Cougars will continue the three-game series with game two Saturday afternoon. Sunday's finale is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
