With a scintillating final lap, Washington sophomore Eric Garner ran the ninth-fastest indoor mile in the nation this season, shattering the school record with a 4-minute, 3.04-second win at today's UW Quad Classic in Dempsey Indoor. Garner's win earned him a provisional berth at March's NCAA Indoor Championships, and helped the Husky men sweep four dual meets against Northwest collegiate rivals.

In all, the Quad Classic featured a UW school record, five NCAA automatic qualifying marks and fifteen provisional qualifying marks.

Trailing Oregon's Simon Kimata with one lap remaining, Garner accelerated past the one-time national mile leader on the backstretch and never looked back, extending his lead to more than three seconds over the final 200 meters. His school-record time bettered the previous mark, set by John Russell in 2000, by more than two seconds.

The Washington women went 4-1 in dual-meet competition, losing 83-61 to Oregon, a reversal of the result from the Pac-10 rivals' previous meeting two weeks ago.

The women's competition was highlighted by the performance of UCLA senior and American collegiate record holder Tracy O'Hara in the pole vault. O'Hara's winning vault of 14-3 1/2 ranks second in the world in 2002, and was an NCAA automatic-qualifying mark, one of five automatic-qualifying marks set by the Bruins at the meet.

Three Husky women earned event victories, including Kelsey Sheppard in the 60-meter hurdles (8.73 seconds), Shavon Hawkins in the 200-meter dash (25.80) and Zee Ogarro in a photo-finish in the 60-meter dash (7.78 seconds). Senior Courtney Inman also provided a highlight for UW, placing third in the mile in 2:11.90, the second-fastest time ever indoors at Washington.
