BERKELEY, Calif. - A ninth-inning rally from the Washington baseball team fell just short as the tying run was thrown out at the plate as 21st-ranked California edged the Huskies, 3-2, in a nip-and-tuck game Saturday at Evans Diamond.

Washington (19-14 overall, 4-4 in the Pac-10) had a chance in the ninth thanks to a one-out double from David Bentrott. But pinch runner Andy Smith was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on a single from Bradley Boyer. The Huskies then got a single from Doug Cherry to put two on, but the game ended on a long flyout from pinch hitter Chase Anselment.

The series is now tied at one win apiece as the Huskies beat the Bears, 7-3, on Friday.

Starter Justin Jones (8-2) picked up the win for Cal (21-10 overall, 7-4 Pac-10), allowing two runs (one earned) on 10 hits over eight and two-thirds. Matt Flemer, who gave up the single to Boyer, the first batter he faced, recorded the save.

Washington starter Andrew Kittredge (5-3) suffered the loss. He pitched six and one-third innings, allowing three runs on five hits.

Cherry, the Huskies' senior second baseman, went 4-for-5 with a double.

Washington grabbed the first lead of the game with a run in the third as Troy Scott singled and eventually scored on a single from Bentrott.

In the bottom of the third, Cal drew even as Darrel Matthews tripled and scored on a double from Danny Oh.

In the fifth, the UW went back in front, 2-1, as Sean Meehan singled, stole second and scored on a single from Bradley Boyer.

However, Cal tied it at 2-2 with a run in the sixth and then went on top, 3-2, with another in the seventh. In the sixth, Brian Guinn was hit by a pitch to lead off and eventually scored from third on a groundout.

In the seventh, Cal got what proved to be the game's winning run when Marcus Semien doubled and scored on a triple from Oh.

The Huskies and Bears play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in a game that will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
