SEATTLE - A three-run double from first baseman Curt Rindal highlighted a four-run first inning as the Washington baseball team grabbed an early lead and then went on to beat Southern Utah, 6-2, Tuesday in a non-conference game at Husky Ballpark.
Rindal also hit a solo homer in the eighth to finish the day 3-for-4 with four RBI. Washington, now halfway through a 12-game homestand, improved to 4-8 on the season while the Thunderbirds fell to 2-15.
UW sophomore Bryce Mooney (1-1) earned the win in his second college start, allowing one run on three hits. Mooney, who had struggled in his first two outings of the year, giving up three hits and seven walks over one-third of an inning, cruised through most of his five innings. After walking the SUU leadoff batter in the first, he struck out the next five and finished with a career-high seven strikeouts.
Washington jumped out to a very quick lead as sophomore second baseman Bradley Boyer homered on the first pitch to lead off the first inning. It was the first home run of the year for the Enumclaw High grad.
The Huskies went on to load the bases on two singles and a hit batter. Rindal, a senior from Mt. Vernon, then laced a three-run double down the left-field line, clearing the bases and giving the UW a 4-0 lead after one.
In the third, the Thunderbirds got on the board when Robert Sandstrom singled and scored on a single from Joe Wright. In the eighth, pinch hitter Bucky Aona hit a solo homer, but the Huskies answered with back-to-back homers from Ty Rasmussen and Rindal to lead off the eighth inning.
SUU starter Dustin Wittwer (1-2) suffered the loss despite pitching well after the first. He allowed four runs on six hits over seven innings.
This Friday through Sunday, Pacific visits Husky Ballpark for a three-game series. Live video and stats for all three games will be available at gohuskies.com.
