Seattle - Washington athletic director Barbara Hedges announced today the Huskies' 2004 season opening home game against Fresno State has been moved from Saturday, Sept. 4 to Sunday, Sept. 5. The game will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net. The exact kickoff time for the game will be announced at a later date but will take place between 3:30 and 5 p.m. PT.
"With the following Monday being Labor Day, it presents this opportunity for the team to start next season with a nationally televised game," Hedges said. "Playing a late-afternoon game at that time of the year will be an outstanding opportunity to showcase our team and Husky Stadium to the nation. Making the announcement this early in the year should allow the fans and other campus organizations to adjust their schedules accordingly."
The matchup between the Huskies and Bulldogs will mark only the second time the teams have met. Washington defeated Fresno State 49-14 during the 1979 season in a game played at Husky Stadium.
Next season's opener marks the first time since the 1999 season the Huskies have played a non-Saturday regular-season game. That year Washington opened at BYU on a Thursday evening.
