WASHINGTON HEAD COACH Lorenzo Romar
"Some may look at the game and figure that we were supposed to win and win soundly. You can look at it that way, but it could have been the other way. We could have come out and got the lead, but become distracted. I am disappointed about us committing 24 turnovers. At the same time, I thought our defensive pressure was really good. What typified the game was Curtis Allen in there the last few minutes playing with the reserves who have not gotten much time, and Curtis was running the offense trying to get those guys shots. Even those guys were passing up shots to get better shots. In a situation like that, you cannot ask much more of our guys. That is why I am proud of our guys tonight."
On the Danger of Having a Game Like This Before the Conference Opener
"You can look at it like that, but I think the game that was big for us was San Diego State. We started talking about the Pac-10 before that game. We talked about this game as a game we wanted to play the right way and we wanted to continue to improve. In a game like this it is easy to get full of yourself. I don't think that is the case here. We talked about doing things right and as well as having the outcome. I know though that when we play Cal and Stanford, it's going to be a different story."
On the Development of the Team
"I think our team is growing. We started out 3-0 and there were some games in which we shot the ball real well, but we didn't execute the way we wanted to. It caught up with us. We started to turn it around in the Houston game, by doing things that the score does not reflect. I don't know if you understand how important it is for us to play right. Three weeks ago we may have won this game by 25 and have given up easy baskets and not shared the ball. This was a big win for us because of how we won."
On Sophomore Forward Bobby Jones
"Bobby has just been nails for us. He didn't have a great second half but he had a phenomenal first half. He had a great game against San Diego State and has just been pretty consistent for us."
COLUMBIA HEAD COACH JOE JONES
"Washington did a great job. You have to give them all the credit in the world. They just really came after us right from the start. We couldn't make a pass and we're a passing team. They took away passes and made us put the ball on the floor, but we didn't have much success at that either."
"They have a great team. They're young. I know Coach Romar and he's going to get these guys to play hard. It was just a matter of time before they were able to put a game like this together."
Comparing Washington and California
"I think athletically Washington is a little bit better overall. Washington might be more balanced in their scoring attack. Cal doesn't have as many options."
