PORTLAND, Ore. - Sophomore Josh Conover earned a win in his first career start as the 24th-ranked Washington baseball team beat Portland, 13-1, Tuesday in the first of a two- game, non-conference series at Pilot Stadium.

The Huskies' win was their 13th in their last 14 games and improved their record to 17-7 on the season. Portland fell to 4-19 with the loss.

Conover (1-0), a right-hander from Kirkland's Lake Washington High, had made 13 career relief appearances before getting the start vs. the Pilots. He worked five innings, allowing six hits and one run while striking out five.

After posting a run in the first inning on second baseman Greg Isaacson's solo homer, the Huskies broke the game open with four runs in the third. Catcher Aaron Hathaway's bases-loaded double cleared the bases before John Otness followed with a double down the left-field line to plate Hathaway, giving the UW a 5-0 lead.

After the Huskies added a run in the fourth, Portland broke through in the fifth when catcher Joe Watson hit a solo homer.

Washington posted three more in the sixth on an RBI double from Isaacson, a sacrifice fly from Kyle Larsen and an RBI single from Chad Boudon.

UP starter Trent Kristjanson (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing eight earned runs on 10 hits over five and two-thirds innings.

Husky sophomore reliever Jamie Hawkins, making his first appearance after missing the first part of the season due to illness, retired six of the seven batters he faced, allowing a single while striking out two in two innings. Freshmen Matt Kasser and Keaton Everitt each pitched a perfect inning to close out the game.

Cory Kasto finished with two hits and a walk to lead the Pilots. Washington got hits from eight of nine starters, led by two doubles and a homer from Isaacson, and two hits each from Boudon, Brent Lillibridge, Tila Reynolds and Taylor Johnson.

The Huskies take on the Pilots again Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. before opening the conference season at Stanford this weekend.
