SEATTLE - Husky senior Brad Walker, whose record-setting season was ended Wednesday by a broken hand, was one of 11 West Region men's athletes named Thursday to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-District VIII first-team. The honor puts Walker on the ballot for Academic All-America consideration, results of which will be announced June 17.

A graduate of Spokane's University High, Walker boasts a 3.52 grade-point average in business administration at Washington, with an emphasis in finance and marketing. The senior earned first-team Academic All-Pac-10 honors a year ago.

A three-time NCAA All-American, Walker in 2003 capped a brilliant career with one of the most outstanding individual seasons in Washington history. The senior earned his second-consecutive Pac-10 championship in the pole vault on May 17, and won the NCAA Indoor Championship in March, clearing a Pac-10 record height of 19 feet, 0 1/4 inch.

The vault equaled the sixth-best in NCAA history, ranks Walker in a tie for third in the world in 2003, and is tied for the best mark by an American vaulter this year.
