Washington Post-Game Quotes

Head Coach Tia Jackson

Opening Statement: “I guess this is what it feels like on the other side of this past Saturday. Hitting that buzzer beater; Sami was in a big time zone, Regina was a compliment to that and this one [Sarah Morton] can break down pretty much anyone and I’m so excited for these girls. We beat a very good team in BYU and Jeff does a very good job with his players. They’re known for their three point shooting and I’ll tell you what, these ladies played their tails off and they deserved a victory today.”

On Second Half Defense: “We knew that BYU was a four-out one-in motion team and they have a lot of motion going on away from the basketball so we knew we had to apply a great deal of pressure so that we could make them do something a little more unorthodox. We had five to six charges today just taking them out of their element.”

On Game-Winning Play: “We did a little UCLA pick to get Sami on the block and post up. She’s one of our best post players even though she’s a guard for us and then Sami was going to rescreen for Regina to get her back on the block. The person guarding Sami played her with her hands down so she read it and took advantage of it. It was a big-time shot.”

Junior Sarah Morton

On Getting Ball to Sami: “I always have confidence in Sami, I want to get the ball in her hands. Whether it be down low in the post or coming off a screen to shoot a three or drive, I have faith in her.”

Senior Sami Whitcomb

On Scoring Last 12 Points: “I felt good and that we could do it, but it didn’t feel like I was doing it all. I felt like it was a team thing and I wasn’t recognizing that I was scoring every time but that we were scoring and we were right there to win the game.”

On Hitting Buzzer Beater: “It’s great when you feel like you’ve been on the opposite end of it so many times especially with the last game. We felt like it was our game and we just let it slip out of our hands late and that wasn’t going to happen this time. We were on the opposite end of it coming back but we never gave up and we always believed we could do it. It was great to see it executed like it was.”
