SEATTLE - Sophomore Josh Conover picked up his fourth win in as many starts as the Washington baseball team beat defending NAIA champion Lewis-Clark State, 15-3, Tuesday night at Husky Ballpark.
Conover, a righty from Lake Washington High, improved to 4-0 on the year, with all four wins coming in mid-week starts. He allowed three runs on six hits while striking out seven over six innings.
Second baseman Greg Isaacson led the UW attack with a home run, a double two singles and four RBIs in six at bats. Third baseman John Otness went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles for Washington while Brent Lillibridge was 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Shortstop Tila Reynolds, who went 2-for-3 with a double, broke a 3-3 tie in the third, giving the UW the lead for good with a two-run single.
The win improved the Huskies' record to 29-13 while the Warriors fell to 33-12.
Both teams posted a pair of runs in the first inning. For L-C State, Micah Furtado and Paul Gallegos lead off with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice bunt moved each runner up a base and Furtado scored on a wild pitch. Gallegos made it 2-0, scoring when Emerson Frostad grounded out to second base.
In the Husky half of the first, Isaacson singled and stole second before scoring on a single from Kyle Larsen. Larsen tied the game on an RBI double from Otness.
The Warriors went ahead in the third when Furtado tripled and scored on a Frostad single. But the Huskies went in front in the bottom of the third. Isaacson belted a solo homer, his sixth, before the UW loaded the bases on walks to Aaron Hathaway and Larsen and a single from Otness. After a strikeout, Reynolds came through with a two-out, two-run single and the UW led, 5-3.
Washington posted three more runs in the seventh on RBI singles from Lillibridge and Isaacson and a sacrifice fly from Hathaway. In the eighth, Washington scored seven more. Lillibridge singled home two and Isaacson followed with a two-run double. Freshman Grant Gerrard's first career hit drove in Isaacson and Steve Ramsey's first home run of the year made it 15-3.
L-C starter Tim Petke, a transfer from USC, suffered the loss to fall to 5-2 on the season. The right-hander allowed five runs on nine hits while fanning six in five innings.
Next up for the Huskies is a three-game, Pac-10 series at Washington State Friday through Sunday. All three games will air live on KKNW AM-1150.
