Box Score

SEATTLE - Gonzaga rebounded from an early deficit and went on to beat the Washington baseball team, 6-4, in a non-conference game Monday night at Husky Ballpark.

The Bulldogs improved to 21-9 on the season while Washington fell to 17-12.

Bulldogs starter Kenny Smith (2-0), making his first start of the year, went five and one-third innings for the win, scattering seven hits and allowing three runs. UW starter Steven Swift (0-1) took the loss in his second Husky start, giving up four runs on eight hits over three and two-thirds.

GU reliever Derek Peterson pitched the final three and two-thirds for the save, allowing one run on two hits. Washington's Adam Cimber gave the Huskies two and two-thirds innings of one-hit relief.

Washington scored a pair of runs in the second inning to take the lead. With Jacob Lamb and Andrew Ely aboard at the corners, freshman shortstop Erik Forgione lined a hit to center field, but Gonzaga center fielder Royce Bolinger tried to make a diving catch and ball got well past him, allowing both runs to score and Forgione to coast into third base with a triple.

In the top of the third, Gonzaga's Payden Cawley Lamb singled and scored from first base when Bolinger smacked a double off the fence in left-center field. Clayton Eslick followed with a single to right and Bolinger came home on an error. Later in the inning, a sacrifice fly from Steven Halcomb brought home another run to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 edge.

In the fourth, Eric Lane led off the top of the inning with a single and scored on a double from Cawley Lamb, increasing the Zags lead to 4-2.

Washington got one back in the fifth when Jayce Ray walked and eventually came around to score on a ground-ball error off of the bat of Caleb Brown.

In the seventh, Gonzaga added to its lead. Bolinger drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a single and scored on a single and an error. Later in the seventh, an Andy Hunter sacrifice fly brought home another, stretching the Bulldogs' lead to 6-3.

In the ninth, the Huskies scored a fourth run when Will Sparks led off with a pinch-hit single and eventually scored on a two-out single from Chase Anselment, bringing the potential tying run to the plate. Peterson, however, got a groundout to end the game.

Joe Meggs had two hits and Forgione drove in two runs to lead the UW offense. Stanford and Eslick each had three hits for Gonzaga.

The Huskies and Bulldogs play again Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. This weekend, the Huskies travel to Berkeley to face California in a three-game, Pac-12 series.
