Senior guard Abdul Gaddy reports in from Barcelona, Spain during day two of the basketball teams' foreign tour.
The flight was really long. I probably slept four hours. I tried to sleep as long as I could. The rest of the flight I was either listening to music or watching movies and trying to make the time go by as fast as I could. It was the longest flight that I have ever been on. It made me really tired, but it was one of those where I still couldn't sleep.
We landed in Paris at 8:30 a.m. We left Seattle at 1:00 p.m. and we landed 8:30 the next day! We had a four hour layover in Paris, but that was cool. We got to mingle with different people, see the sights in the airport, get Euros. It was cool.
I slept the whole flight from Paris to Barcelona, but when we got here it really hit me and I was really tired. When we were waiting for our bus I fell asleep and when we got to our hotel I just thought I was going to go to sleep. We got there at 4:30 and Coach Fortier told us to make sure we stayed up so we could adjust to the time zone. I ended up walking around the city with my teammates: C.J., Andrew, Shawn, Desmond and Scott. We walked around looking for Wi-Fi and found it at a Starbucks. We will try to go there as much as possible and do social media like Twitter, Instagram and talk to people on different aps.
When we walked around we really got a chance to see just how different Barcelona is than the states. There are so many more monuments, different kinds of buildings and architecture and so many shops. We were walking around and people were so nice. We were trying to speak Spanish to them. Everyone was so nice and would say hola to us. They weren't mean at all to us as we tried to speak to them in our broken Spanish. I took Spanish for three years in high school, but I haven't taken it at all since I've been in college so some of it has left me. I am recognizing words and I try my best. I think all of us on our walk took Spanish, so we knew some. We were out for a while, so it was fun walking around exploring, getting a feel for Barcelona and meeting new people.
I was so tired that when we got back from walking, I fell asleep right away. I went to bed at 10:30 and fell asleep in what I was wearing. I woke up at 3 o'clock and changed clothes! Me and my roommate, C.J. both woke up at 7:00 this morning, without alarms. We got up, ate breakfast and ended up walking to Starbucks to get Wi-Fi.
Today, I enjoyed our trip. The Sagrada Familia church was real cool. It's amazing that it is still being built (started by Antoni Gaudi in 1882, scheduled to be completed in 2026). Being able to see different sculptures depicting Jesus and the famous scenes around his life and death was really cool. Patrick, our tour guard, was obviously very knowledgeable.
The place we all really wanted to see was the site of the 1992 Olympics (Montjuic Hill). To be able to see where the 1992 Dream Team played was really cool. We took a whole bunch of pictures. The whole experience was fun and it really brought the team together.
Tonight, we have our first game. First, I'm going to take a nap. We are going to have to try to come out and play the best we can and get a win. I think the main thing we have to do is to make sure we don't take teams lightly on this trip. We're having fun, but at the same time we want to be competitive and win games.
Adios for now.
