WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Washington redshirt sophomore outfielder Kyle Conley has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week and California junior right-handed pitcher Matt Gorgen has been named Pitcher of the Week for May 5 - 11, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Conley, from Richland, Wash., earned his second consecutive Pac-10 Player of the Week award with another big week, notching four more homers and nine RBI. In Tuesday's win at Portland, Conley was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer. Friday night in a win over Washington State, he was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and three RBI. In Sunday's win over WSU, he hit two more home runs and finished the game 3-for-3 with two homers, four RBI and an intentional walk.
Gorgen, from Clayton, Calif., earned a win and a save last weekend at Stanford as the Golden Bears won two-of-three over the No. 6-ranked Cardinal. On Friday, he picked up the win, getting the final out in the ninth inning with a runner in scoring position and striking out the final two batters in the bottom of the 10th. On Saturday, Gorgen earned his ninth save of the season, pitching the ninth inning and getting the final out with runners on first and second base. For the weekend, he threw 2.1 innings with three hits, no runs, no walks and four strikeouts. Gorgen's ninth save this season is second on Cal's all-time single-season save list, and his 20th career save is second on the Bears' all-time career save list. On the year, he has 39 strikeouts in 35.0 innings with a 2.06 ERA.
The Player of the Week honor is the second of Conley's career, and the 56th such honor for Washington. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the first for Gorgen, and the 28th selection all-time for California.
