INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Washington assistant coach Reedus Thurmond and former Husky Will Conwell each earned top-14 finishes in the discus Sunday at the 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at IUPUI's Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium, capping a furious week of action by Husky athletes and coaches at the four-day meet, which concluded Sunday.
Five of the 16 UW athletes and coaches competing at both the AT&T USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships and the FinishLine USA Junior Track and Field Championships, held concurrently, earned top-10 finishes, while three - including 2007 U.S. pole vault champion Brad Walker, a 2004 UW grad -- earned the opportunity to represent the United States at world championship competitions later this year.
Sunday's discus competition featured UW assistant throws coach Thurmond, 13th with a best of 181 feet, 9 inches, and former Husky Conwell, who placed 14th at 181-0. Stanford's Michael Robertson captured the 2007 U.S. discus title with a best throw of 21-0-1.
Thurmond and his wife, two-time Olympian Aretha (Hill) Thurmond, each competed in the meet just three weeks following the birth of their first child, earlier this month. Aretha Thurmond - a 1998 UW grad and a three-time U.S. discus champion - placed sixth in the women's discus final Friday.
