Tucson, Ariz. - Washington's Zach Bixler shot a second-round 4-under 68 at the NCAA West Regional today, placing the sophomore fifth at 7-under 137 headed into Saturday's final round. The 26th-ranked Huskies shot 7-under 281 in round two to climb up the leaderboard into ninth-place at 7-under 569.

"We're excited," said Washington head coach Matt Thurmond. "This is what you play for. We have one day to compete and it's tight enough that we can't play mediocre and make it (to the NCAA Championship). We need to play well to advance. As a competitor that's exciting."

Arizona's second-round 15-under 273 catapulted the host Wildcats into the team lead at 24-under 552. Florida and North Carolina State are second, three strokes back at 21-under 555. The top ten teams from the West Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships in Sunriver, Ore., May 31-June 3.

Bixler's round included five birdies (holes three, four, nine, 11, and 13) and just one bogey (hole 18). The Richland, Wash., native has carded rounds in the 60s in four of the last six rounds (including rounds one and three of the Pac-10 Championship and the first round of the West Regional). Utah's Dustin Pimm leads all individuals at 10-under 134.

"It's pretty exciting to see Zach play like that," Thurmond said. "If he plays well alongside the guys who've led us all year - Alex (Prugh), Erik (Olson) and James (Lepp) - we're capable of not only advancing, we could do some damage at the NCAA Championship."

Senior James Lepp had the Huskies' second-best round of the day, shooting 3-under 69. The 2005 NCAA Champion sits in 22nd place at 4-under 140 headed into the final round. Juniors Erik Olson and Alex Prugh matched each other for the second straight day, shooting identical rounds of even-par 72 to tie for 75th at 2-over 146. Sophomore Sterling Clark shot 2-over 74 in round two and sits in 115th place at 8-over 152.

The third and final round of the NCAA West Regional starts tomorrow morning at 6:30 a.m., with Washington teeing off beginning at 7:17. Live scoring of the round is available at
