Setting the Scene: Huskies Head To Oregon State & Washington State
The No.1 Huskies will be heading down Interstate 5 to take on Oregon State on Saturday, April 13th. UW will be taking four boats (varsity 8+, second varsity 8+, varsity 4+ and freshmen 8+) to Dexter Lake in the Willamete Valley to race Oregon State at 12:00 p.m. The event is held in conjunction with the Covered Bridge Regatta, which features masters and juniors competitors from all across the Pacific Northwest. The last time Washington faced the Beavers was in 2011. Those races--also a part of the Covered Bridge Regatta--were swept by the Huskies. UW will also send a few select men's boats to the Palouse to face Washington State's men's club program on the Snake River in Lewiston, Idaho.
The official Twitter page of the Husky Crew will also have live in-race updates: http://Twitter.com/UWHuskyCrew. Results from the Covered Bridge Regatta can be found the event's personal Twitter feed: http://Twitter.com/OAR_CBR. Post-race recap will be available on GoHuskies.com, the official Web site of Husky athletics.
Huskies Coaching Staff
Michael Callahan is in his sixth year at the head of the Husky men's crew program. The UW alum coached his team to a sixth consecutive Ten Eyck Championship in 2012, an unprecedented feat in collegiate rowing. In 2012, Washington completed a sweep of all the grand finale races at the IRAs to capture its second-consecutive and 15th overall National Championship. Prior to taking over the men's coaching position, Callahan served for three seasons as the Huskies freshmen coach. A 1996 graduate of the University of Washington, Callahan has also been an active member on the international level, where he's competed and coached. Assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Rick Gherst handles the coaching duties for the freshmen. Gherst is in his third season overall on the UW coaching staff, and first in his current position. In the fall he took over for former freshmen coach Luke McGee, who left to take a position with US Rowing.
Last Time Out
Washington opened up their official intercollegiate season by hosting Brown on the Montlake Cut on April 6th as part of the Husky Open. Due to wind and rough waters, the 2,000 meter course had to be shortened to 1750m and eventually to 1500m. Despite the conditions, the No.1 Huskies completed the sweep of No. 2 Brown, showing why they deserve to hold the top spot in the USRowing Collegiate poll.
About Oregon State University
The Beavers are coached by Steve Todd, who is in his 6th year coaching in Corvallis. Todd is a 2000 graduate of Washington and is a Seattle-area native. The Beavers competed last week at the San Diego Crew Classic, finishing third, fourth and fifth in the JV8, V8, and Freshmen 8 Grand Final races, respectively.
The 2,000-meter, seven-lane course on Dexter Lake is located on Lowell State Park, which is 22 miles southeast of Eugene, Ore. To reach the course from I-5, take Hwy. 58 eastbound (exit 188A), 13 miles to Dexter Lake.
Scouting The Huskies
Washington is a program where superlatives are plentiful, but it's hard not to categorize the 2012 campaign as one of the, if not the best in school history. The Huskies captured their 15th National Championship, and it was the fashion in which they did so that was most impressive. 2012 was a year of sweeps for the Huskies, starting with the 101st running of the Cal Dual. The Huskies swept Cal, then went on to sweep all finale races in the Pac-12 and IRA Championships. Washington topped it off with their 6th straight Ten Eyk award, given to the team that scores the most overall points. It was as dominating of a season as collegiate rowing has seen in its long and storied history. Washington begins the 2013 season ranked number 1 overall in the first 2013 USRowing Collegiate Poll.
