Box Score

PROVO, Utah - Brigham Young broke a 3-3 tie with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run double from Kasey Ko, en route to an 8-3 win over the Washington baseball team Tuesday in the first game of a two-game series at Miller Field.

The Huskies (16-14) had just come back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth before the BYU rally. The Cougars improved to 20-13 with the win.

BYU grabbed an early lead, scoring a run in the first without benefit of a hit. Right fielder Collin Fanning drew a one-out walk, stole second and third and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Kent Walton, giving the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.

In the second inning, BYU added two more. With the bases loaded on two singles and a walk, shortstop Austin Hall doubled to left field, driving in a pair to make it 3-0.

In the fourth, UW senior Curt Rindal hit a one-out solo home run, his seventh of the year, to straightaway center to get the Huskies on the board. After the home run, the Huskies loaded the bases and a walk to Husky right fielder Brett Kaluza forced in a run to cut the BYU lead to 3-2.

The Huskies tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth when a double from Trevor Petersen drove in Matt Hague.

However, BYU answered in the bottom of the inning. With one run already in and the bases loaded with no outs, first baseman Ko doubled down the left-field line, clearing the bases and moving the Cougars in front, 7-3.

BYU reliever Michael Ward (2-1), who came on in the fifth, picked up the victory. Husky starter Nick Haughian suffered the loss to drop to 3-4 on the season. He gave up seven runs on eight hits over four-plus innings.

The Huskies and Cougars close out the two-game series Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. MDT (1:00 p.m. PDT). A live audio broadcast of the game can be heard live at gohuskies.com.
