Box Score

SEATTLE - Washington ace Austin Voth out-dueled Cal Poly's Joey Wagman as the Husky baseball team handed the Mustangs their first loss of the year with a 2-1 victory Friday night at Husky Ballpark.

Second baseman Robert Pehl provided the bulk of the UW offense as he doubled to drive in the Huskies' first run and then doubled and scored the go-ahead run in the seventh.

Voth (2-1), who struck out 14 last Friday in a win at Lamar, went seven and one-third innings for the win, allowing one run on six hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. Tyler Kane got the game's final four outs to pick up the save.

Wagman (2-1), who entered the game with a 2-0 record and a 1.50 ERA, took the loss despite a solid night. In six and two-thirds, he gave up two runs on four hits with no walks and seven Ks. Cal Poly suffered its first loss of the year to drop to 7-1.

Pitching dominated the early innings as a pair of two-out singles from Cal Poly represented the only two baserunners through the first three innings. However, in the fourth, the Mustangs broke through on a two-out solo homer from Nick Torres.

Washington, hitless through the first three, broke through with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score at 1-1. Jayce Ray singled up the middle and Pehl followed with a double into the left-field corner, driving in Ray to tie it up.

The Huskies (3-6) finally broke through to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Pehl got it going with another doubled into the left-field corner. Designated hitter Michael Camporeale followed with a line single into center, driving in Pehl to put the Dawgs on top, 2-1.

In the eighth, the Mustangs got a one-out single from Denver Chavez to end Voth's outing. After a second out, DH Brian Mundell walked to bring up Torres, who had since added a double to his earlier homer. Kane came on and got Torres to bounce into a force to end the inning with the Husky lead in tact.

The Huskies and Mustangs continue the series with a 2:00 p.m. game Saturday and a 1:00 p.m. game Sunday.
