Box Score

SEATTLE - Fifth-year senior Bradley Boyer belted a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to break a 9-9 tie and lift the Washington baseball team to a 10-9 win over Fresno State Friday night at Husky Ballpark in the Huskies' home opener.

Boyer, who missed the entire 2009 season due to elbow surgery, came up with runners at first and second with two down in the ninth and laced a single to right field to score Sean Meehan, who narrowly beat a throw to the plate.

The win is the second ninth-inning, 10-9 victory for the Huskies (3-1), who beat Gonzaga by the same score last Sunday.

Reliever Forrest Snow, who entered the game in the top of the ninth with the score tied at 9-9, no outs and a runner at second, retired all three batters he faced to pick up the victory.

Boyer finished the night 2-for-5 with two RBI. Catcher Pierce Rankin with 3-for-3 with a double, a homer and two RBI.

The two teams traded runs early and, in fact, the UW scored in each of the first six innings.

Fresno State (3-2) grabbed the early lead when second baseman Danny Muno hit a two-out, solo homer in the top of the first inning.

Washington tied the score in the bottom of the first when freshman Chase Anselment came through with a two-out single to send home Andy Smith.

However, Fresno State used the long ball to move back on top in the second as Jordan Ribera led off the inning with his fourth of the year. Later in the second, Garrett Weber laced a two-out RBI to make it a 3-1 Bulldogs lead.

In the bottom of the second, the UW scored three runs to move in front. With two on and two out, Boyer singled through the middle to score one run and, on an errant throw to third, Smith scored to tie it. After a hit batter, catcher Pierce Rankin singled to left, driving in Boyer to put the Huskies on top, 4-3.

After the Bulldogs went back on top in the third on a two-run homer from Trent Garrison, the Huskies replied once more in the bottom of the inning. After a single from Caleb Brown and a double from Jacob Lamb put two aboard, shortstop David Bentrott reached on an infield single to plate one and another crossed on an errant throw to first, giving the UW a 6-5 edge.

Fresno State kept the runs coming in the fourth, tying the score at 6-6 on an RBI groundout, but Washington scored on an RBI single from Anselment in the bottom of the fourth to go back in front, 7-6. In the fifth, after holding Fresno State scoreless for the first time, the UW added a run on a two-out error.

In the sixth, Rankin led off the inning with a home run, his first of the season, to stretch the lead to 9-6.

Fresno State, held off the scoreboard since the fourth, fought back for three runs in the eighth to tie it. Weber singled to drive in one and Dusty Robinson's second double of the ninth, with the bases loaded and two outs, sent home two more to knot the score at 9-9.

The Huskies and Bulldogs continue the series with a 2:00 p.m. game Saturday and close it out Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
