Seattle - Three members of Washington's NCAA Champion women's rowing team have earned first team all-America honors as announced by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). Washington, which recently won its third NCAA team championship, was the only school to have three people honored on the first team.
Senior captain Rika Geyser (Pretoria, South Africa), and juniors Anna Mickelson (Bellevue, Wash.) and Mary Whipple (Sacramento, Calif.), who all helped lead Washington the varsity eight national championship en route to the NCAA team title, were honored for their season-long efforts on the water.
Geyser, who was also recently honored as one of three top student-athletes by the University, closed her Husky career as a three-year varsity rower and member of two NCAA Champion teams. This is her second consecutive first team all-America honor. Geyser rowed the five seat on the varsity eight crew this year.
Mickelson and Whipple, who are both currently in Ithica, New York at the USRowing Pre-Elite National Team Selection Camp, also helped lead the Husky varsity eight to its 10th-consecutive Pac-10 Conference title as well as individually earning their second national championship. Both were a part of the varsity four that won a national title in 1999. For Whipple, who completed her second season as the varsity coxswain, it was her second straight first team all-America selection. Mickelson, who received second team honors last season, makes her first appearance in the elite group. She rowed in the six seat on this year's varsity eight.
Athletes were chosen from the five All-Region First Teams selected in May. The student-athletes were chosen based on the following criteria: varsity eight record, strength of schedule, nomination rank (the rank order of nominees as chosen by the nominating coach), coach's comments and two kilometer ergometer score. Only those student-athletes selected to the All-Region First teams were eligible for all-America honors.
