CAMDEN, N.J. - The Huskies won three heats and the freshman eight boat placed first in the repechage Thursday, ensuring that all four Washington crews advanced to the semifinals at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) men's national championships on the Cooper River.

The four Washington crews compete Friday morning in semifinal heats that determine the field for Saturday's six-boat grand finals.

The freshman eight had the toughest time among the four UW entries. The Huskies' first-year crew placed second to California in the heat, forcing them to race in the repechage to earn a semifinal berth. The Golden Bears, Harvard, Brown and Princeton were the heat winners.

Washington defeated runner-up Oregon State by nearly seven seconds to win its repechage race. The Huskies finished in 5-minutes, 59.94-seconds followed by the Beavers in 6:06.42. Yale, Wisconsin and Cornell were the other repechage winners who earned spots in the 12-team semifinals.

The Huskies won the last two national championships in the freshman eight competition.

The other three Washington boats didn't need the second chance the repechage provides. They all required only one race Thursday, saving energy for Friday's semifinals.

Minimizing the number of races is important, according to Washington men's coach Bob Ernst whose Huskies have been training in New Jersey since Saturday.

"Today is the first hot day we've had," said Ernst of the 70-degree temperatures. "You don't want to have to race twice in one day in these conditions, especially with races in the next two days."

Washington's Pac-10 champion varsity eight crew handily defeated Brown to move into the semifinals. UW earned the bronze medal at the 2002 IRA Championships.

The second-ranked Huskies recorded a time of 5:45.41, over three seconds faster than the 5:48.55 posted by Brown. Top-ranked Harvard, No. 3 Wisconsin and No. 6 Navy were the other heat winners.

"The varsity had a real nice race and didn't get pressed too hard," Ernst described.

Four-time defending champion California placed second to Navy in the heats, but moved into the finals by virtue of a repechage win.

Washington registered the fastest time among second varsity (junior varsity) crews. The Huskies maintained a narrow margin for the duration of the 2,000-meter race to edge Cornell by less than one second. UW finished in 5:46.15 followed by Cornell in 5:46.72 and Brown in 6:00.50.

The other second varsity eight heat winners were California, Wisconsin and Harvard.

"The jayvees probably kept Cornell in the race too long. It was a race all the way to the end and consequently, we had the fastest time in the heats," Ernst explained. "Our other crew, the varsity four, had to row their butts off. They were in a race all the way with Columbia."

The Huskies clocked the best time in the varsity four event, posting a near two-second triumph over Columbia. UW's 6:26.54 was over five seconds better than the times of the other two heat winners, North Carolina (6:32.91) and Harvard (6:42.25).

The Washington women's crew begins NCAA Championship competition with heat racing Friday at Eagle Creek in Indianapolis, Ind. The Huskies have three crews at the national regatta and they are entered in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four events.
