SEATTLE - The Washington baseball team erupted for nine runs in the sixth inning to cruise to a 12-3 win over Southern Utah Saturday at Husky Ballpark. The team's had re-scheduled a doubleheader for Saturday, but decided to revert to the original schedule, which called for a three-game series. The Huskies will go for a series sweep Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
The Huskies (8-3) had trouble figuring out SUU starter Sky Grant (0-1) early in the game. The UW didn't manage a hit until the fourth, when Michael Done doubled to score Tyler Davidson, who had reached on a walk. Up 3-1 heading into the sixth, the Huskies' bats came alive.
After the first batter struck out, the next eight UW batters recorded base hits, including a two-run homer from Ben Miller, which was immediately followed by a solo homer from catcher Jefferson Thiel. Done closed out the inning's scoring with a three-run homer off of reliever Cody Hunter.
Husky sophomore Sean White improved his won-lost record to 3-0 with the victory. The right-hander from Mercer Island allowed one unearned run on six hits and no walks over six innings. His season earned run average is now 2.00 after three starts. Grant threw five and one-third innings in the loss.
Done led the Husky hitters, going 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI. Brandon Jacobson with 2-for-3 with two singles, two runs and two stolen bases. Bryan Johnson was the only other Husky with multiple hits (2-for-4) as all nine starters in the batting order were replaced in the seventh or eighth inning.
Curtis Jacobsen led the Thunderbirds (1-14), going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.
After Sunday's series-ending game vs. Southern Utah, Washington will take the week off for finals. Next Saturday, USC comes to Husky Ballpark for the first Pac-10 series of the season.
