LOS ANGELES - Washington was picked to finish fourth in the 2005-06 Pacific-10 Conference men's basketball race in a press poll that was released Thursday at the league's annual media day.

For the fourth straight season Arizona was the media's choice to win the conference title. The Wildcats received 23 first-place votes and accumulated 325 points. Stanford was projected second with nine first-place votes and 294 points, followed by UCLA with the 263 points and the remaining two first-place votes.

Washington collected 238 points to finish fourth, ahead of No. 5 California (212), No. 6 Oregon (183), No. 7 Oregon State (132), No. 8 USC (87), No. 9 Washington State (86) and No. 10 Arizona State (50).

Last year's media poll was accurate for the top-three places. Projected favorite Arizona won the Pac-10 regular-season crown followed by the Huskies whose second-place position in the balloting was their highest ever since the media poll began in 1989. Stanford, picked third, tied UCLA for the No. 3 spot in the final standings.

Washington registered a 14-4 conference record in 2005 before winning its first Pac-10 Tournament championship.

The media poll hasn't always proved prophetic. In 2004, Washington finished sixth places higher than its eighth-place projection by the press.

Washington was unranked in the preseason USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll released last week. The Huskies were received the third-highest total among those also receiving votes. The Associated Press preseason rankings will be released Monday, Nov. 7.

The Huskies open the season with an exhibition game against Simon Fraser University on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.
