O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic - Seattle Regional - Game #2
November 20, 2008 * Florida International at Washington
Washington Head Coach Lorenzo Romar
"I thought that we played a better second half this game then we have in the previous games unfortunately we played a worse first half. This was our most valuable pre-season game so far. FIU was intent on not crashing for the offensive rebounds and instead getting back on defense and not allowing us any transition points and I thought that threw us off. In the second half we started to move the ball around and look for open shots; we stopped looking for the homerun play. We started to front their post players in the second half which I think helped out defense. Justin Holiday is a great energy guy coming off of the bench it was amazing how much a player can affect a game while only scoring two points. Holiday is a great complimentary player and he just has a skill to help us win games which in my opinion is a great skill to have. Justin Dentmon did a nice job; he got in the zone and stared making shots. That is a great thing for him. We are a better defensive team than last year and I think guys are staring to figure out their roles on the court. Our goal every game is to have less than 13 turnovers. The biggest thing we want from our guards is to get us good shots."
Washington Player Isaiah Thomas
"I thought the key to our run in the second half was that we started to move the ball around once we did that we were getting better shots and were able to get it into the post. They had some big guys down low and we knew they were going to be physical; we just went out in the second half and knew we had to more physical. In the first half I thought we played a little too much one-on-one, we would look at Brockman in the post and when that was not open we went one-on-one and I think that is something we need to fix. Holiday is an energy guy; he comes in and rebounds, plays defense, and does everything we need to spark us coming off of the bench. We are ready and excited to play Kansas."
Washington Player Justin Dentmon
"I thought the biggest issue in the first half was that we were just missing shots. The point when I knew I had to come out and start shooting was during the timeout 51 seconds into the second half, Coach said we were playing like robots and I knew I had to go out there and get the ball moving. Justin Holiday is like a big brother out on the court; when something is wrong or there is a player on the other team heating up he comes out and takes care of it. He comes out on the court and not only sparks our team but puts out the other team's fire. We are ready to play Kansas and I think that our team will step up. It was obvious that (FIU's) main focus was Brockman, and in the first half not having him as an easy target threw us off, but once we started to move the ball around we got better shots and just played better."
