WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Senior Katie Follett can now add one more bullet point to her long list of accolades, as she was named Pac-10 Women's Track Athlete of the Week today for the first time in her career. Follett won the Mt. SAC Relays 1,500-meter invitational on Friday night in a school-record time of 4:10.66.
A seven-time All-American in cross country and track, Follett lowered her already-impressive personal-best by more than four seconds in Walnut, California on Friday in what turned into a duel with fellow Seattle-resident Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific. Pixler led for most of the race, before Follett passed her on the inside down the homestretch for the victory.
Follett's time is the fastest by an American woman this year, and the second-fastest mark in the world, trailing only Kenya's Ann Karindi Mwangi who has run 4:09.41. She now leads NCAA Division-I by more than two seconds at the distance.
The Fort Collins, Colorado native moved past UW legends such as Regina Joyce (PR of 4:12.84) and 2006 NCAA Champion Amy Lia (4:14.63), and broke the record of 4:10.93 held by 2003 grad Courtney Inman, who placed fourth at the NCAA meet that year.
Follett is the two-time defending Pac-10 Champion at 1,500-meters and also set the school-record in the mile run during the indoor season, where she ran 4:34.98, going on to place second at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
This is the second week in a row that a UW woman has earned Pac-10 weekly honors. Last week, junior javelin thrower Brooke Pighin was named Women's Field Athlete of the Week. Follett is just the third Husky to earn the honor on the track, joining hurdler Ashley Lodree and her current teammate, Anita Campbell, who won the award last season.
