PORTLAND, Ore. - All four Washington crews won their races Saturday as the Huskies opened their 2004-05 rowing season at the 16th-annual Portland Loop Regatta on the Willamette River.

The head races were contested on a 7,000-meter stretch of the river from Lake Oswego Pointe to Oaks Park. Teams started from a single-file line at set intervals in a time-trail format.

Both UW women's crews completed the course over one minute ahead of the opposition. The varsity eight captured the women's Championship Eight title with a time of 22:13.95. Host Oregon State placed second in 23:25.17.

The Huskies' junior varsity boat registered a winning time of 22:17.90 in the women's Collegiate Eight event. Oregon State finished 1-minute, 22-seconds back in 23:29.63. Portland placed third and Portland State fourth.

The UW men's varsity won its Championship Eight competition, outracing second place Oregon State. UW finished in 19:59.42, half a minute faster than OSU's mark of 20:29.67.

Last year the Huskies' top men's crew did not compete as their shell was broken during a practice row the day before the regatta. The junior varsity crew was promoted into the Championship Eight field and won the title while UW did not have an entry in the 2003 Collegiate Eight race.

The Husky men's JV was back in the Collegiate Eight race this year and defeated two Oregon State crews and one from Portland to claim the title. UW clocked a time of 20:03.54 and the Beavers were a distant second in 21:39.36.

The entire Husky fleet is in action Sunday, Nov. 14 at the Head of the Lake Regatta that runs from Lake Union eastbound into Lake Washington. That is the final competition of the fall racing season.
