Box Score

IRVINE, Calif. - The Washington baseball team scored four runs in the fourth and used solid relief pitching to hold on, beating UC Irvine, 4-3, Sunday at Anteater Ballpark. The Huskies took the series with two wins in the three games.

Starting pitcher Austin Voth (1-0) gave up three runs on six hits in his five innings, and four Husky relievers combined to hold the Anteaters off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Joshua Fredendall pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two, for his third save.

Freshman Robert Pehl, who homered, and catcher B.K. Santy drove in two runs apiece in the Husky fourth inning to account for all of the UW's runs.

UC Irvine (4-3) opened the scoring in the second inning. Connor Spencer singled to lead off the inning and, after a bunt moved him up, he scored when Ryan Cooper doubled down the right-field line.

In the fourth, the Huskies (4-3) struck back. With one out, Caleb Brown reached on a two-base error and Pehl followed by belted his first college home down the left-field line, giving Washington a 2-1 advantage. The Huskies then went on to load the bases on a walk, a single and a hit batter before Santy came through with a two-out single through the left side, scoring a pair to make it 4-1.

Irvine got two runs back in the fifth when Cooper knocked his second double of the game, took third on a sacrifice and scored on a Chris Rabago single. Later, Rabago scored on a two out single from Jordan Fox to cut the Husky lead to 4-3.

In the seventh, the Anteaters threatened to draw even or move in front, loading the bases with one out on a single and two walks. However, UW reliever Steven Swift, a junior college transfer making his first appearances for the Huskies, came on and struck out Spencer and got Jerry McClanahan to bounce into a force to end the inning with 4-3 lead in tact.

UCI starter Crosby Slaught (0-2) took the loss despite the fact that only one of his four runs allowed was earned. He went five innings, allowing three hits.

Tyler Davis (one inning), Tyler Kane (one-third of an inning) and Steven Swift (two-thirds) also pitched in relief between Voth and Fredendall.

The Huskies wrap up their road trip with a single game Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Cal State Northridge. Next weekend, the UW plays host to Saint Joseph's in a three-day, four-game series at Husky Ballpark.
